One of the features of the Elroy-Sparta trail are the three tunnels, as the trail winds through the bluffs of Monroe County.
This structure goes underneath a large ridge and WI-71.
This tunnel, is tied for shortest with Tunnel #1. It is listed at a length of 1,694 Feet total.
This tunnel is slightly harder to access, and requires a walk. It was built in 1873 at a cost of $75,557; or $44 per foot.
This made it the cheapest to construct. In addition, a rock liner was added in 1878.
The tunnel is an important attraction along the trail, although it is not the most popular.
The tunnel is a straight, bored tunnel. The interior was refurbished in 1878, and included a brick and masonry liner.
Both portals are traditionally built portals, resembling an arch structure. The interior has small indents, for safety when the tunnel carried trains.
Similar to the other tunnels, this one has doors that are typically closed between November and March.
The author has ranked this tunnel as being moderately significant, due to the lack of numerous tunnels in the area.
